For more than 25 years, we have been dedicated to the concept of intellectual
freedom and excellence in education. To further this concept, we established
ProQuest Intellectual Freedom Awards.
These awards are administered on statewide, national and international levels
in conjunction with intellectual freedom committees, the American Library
Association and various academic associations. These awards are presented at
annual professional meetings.
The ProQuest Intellectual Freedom Awards began in conjunction with the
North Carolina Library Association in 1981. Since then, we have established more
than 30 intellectual and academic freedom awards.
Intellectual Freedom Awards are presented to individuals or groups who have
met or resisted attempts at censorship and have otherwise furthered the cause of
intellectual and academic freedom.
Previous winners include public and school librarians, teachers,
administrators, school board members, authors, parents, bookstore owners,
community groups and students.
ProQuest's purpose is to support the efforts of intellectual freedom
committees. By honoring those who oppose censorship, we hope to increase
awareness of the importance of intellectual freedom and to reinforce the idea
that citizens cannot take First Amendment freedoms for granted. Get involved in
your library, speak out, and support those who fight against censorship!
